Keith Roberts Production Manager
My role is to coordinate production activities required to produce the vast array of product we manufacture every year and to meet the sales forecast and quality while remaining within a time frame.
A major part of my daily routine is to update the ERP and use the personnel and resources to best meet production goals. From receipt of Works Orders, I update ERP production planner, breaking all product drawings down into their relevant piece parts; I then determine which operators and machines will be used and determine the sequence of production as well as deciding whether overtime or extra shifts are necessary. I monitor the production run to make sure that it stays on schedule and correct any problems that may arise.
Part of my job is to come up with ways to make the production process more efficient depending on as size and volume of product as discussed with our Sales department to build in flexibility and improve on production techniques. Rather than specialising in specific tasks we build in multi-tasking, within the constraints of the traditional sheet metal assembly line which allows me to easily change production levels and move operators around assembly lines.
Monitoring product standards and implementing quality control procedures with my supervisors is an important part of my role – making sure that the finished product meets the maximum level of quality. If this is not the case, all operators come back to me to discuss and find out how we can solve the problem. Traditional quality control programs reacted only to problems that reached a certain level; however, our preparation and development techniques and programs, such as ISO 9001, emphasises continuous quality improvement and regularly include engaging with the production team and taking on board their suggestions. I work closely with all departments to implement the company's Sedex and Altius standards and also advise purchasing, stock control, and logistics departments.
In principle I control and coordinate all manufacturing processes to ensure goods are produced as part of an efficient process - allocating resources, reducing production costs, maintaining building fabric, quality control, recruiting and motivating workers, implementing health and safety guidelines, monitoring worker performance and collaborating with departments across the company.
